Quick answer
Do You Need an Apostille for the USA?
Only if your US immigration filing, university, employer or business counterparty asks for one. The United States has been a Hague Apostille Convention member since 15 October 1981, so when it is asked for, the Singapore document apostille for the USA comes from the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) instead of embassy legalisation. If your checklist doesn't mention an apostille or legalisation, confirm with the receiving authority — we confirm your steps before you pay.
SAL is the only competent authority that legalises Singapore documents for use overseas, and since 16 September 2021 it places an apostille certificate on every document it legalises. Public documents SAL can verify go straight to SAL; private documents and company documents need a Notary Public first.
Not sure what your US checklist or attorney's email is asking for? Send it to us on WhatsApp and we'll go through it with you.
Why Singapore Documents for the USA Get Delayed
"Does the US need an apostille for this?"
Different US bodies ask for different things. Check your checklist; if it asks for an apostille or legalisation, this is the Singapore step — and we tell you before you pay.
Private documents sent straight to SAL
A power of attorney, company papers or a private school certificate needs notarisation first — see notarisation and apostille.
Copy requested, original sent
If your US checklist asks for a certified copy, we arrange a certified true copy so your original stays with you.
Laminated originals
SAL cannot apostille a laminated document. We arrange a fresh extract from the issuing agency, or an apostille on an SAL-made copy if the US body accepts copies.
Digital documents with a QR code that won't scan
The printout must match the online version exactly and the QR code must work — see digital document apostille.
