Quick answer
Do You Need a Birth Certificate Apostille for an Indian Passport or OCI?
Yes, if the Indian High Commission or the authority handling your child's Indian passport or OCI asks for it. India has been a Hague Apostille Convention member since 14 July 2005, so a Singapore birth certificate apostille for India from the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) replaces embassy legalisation. Confirm any other requirements with the receiving authority.
We check whether SAL can verify your child's Singapore birth certificate directly. This page covers India specifically; see our main birth certificate apostille service for other countries, or our apostille for India page for every other document going to India.
Follow the checklist from the Indian High Commission or authority handling your application, and confirm with them whether an apostille is required. Send it to us and we'll prepare the certificate to match.
Why Birth Certificates for India Get Turned Away at SAL
Laminated birth certificate
If the original has been laminated, SAL cannot apostille a laminated document. We tell you whether to get a birth extract from ICA, or an apostille on an SAL-made copy (SGD 11.77) if the Indian authority accepts it.
Handwritten names
On older or amended certificates, a handwritten name must be verifiable by SAL. Check with ICA whether it can be verified; if not, get a new extract. We'll tell you which from a photo.
Digital birth certificate with a faulty QR code
SAL needs an exact printout of the digital extract with a working QR code. We print, scan-test and check it first — see our digital document apostille service.
Verification only through your own login
If the certificate can only be verified through your SingPass or personal email, SAL needs you at the counter. We tell you upfront so no trip is wasted.
