Quick answer

Do You Need an SAL Apostille?

An SAL apostille in Singapore is the certificate the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) attaches to a Singapore document so it can be used overseas. If your document is going to a Hague Apostille Convention country — such as India, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Japan, the UK or the USA — the SAL apostille is the legalisation step it needs, though the receiving authority may set its own extra requirements. SAL is the only authority that legalises Singapore documents for use overseas.

If the country is not part of the Convention — for example the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait or Malaysia — your document needs embassy attestation in Singapore after the SAL step.

Why Documents Get Turned Away at the SAL Counter

Laminated originals

SAL cannot put an apostille on a laminated document. We arrange a fresh extract from the issuing agency, or an apostille on an SAL-made copy if your recipient accepts copies.

Digital documents with a faulty QR code

The printout must match the online version exactly and the QR code must scan. We print, test and check before we go.

Private or company documents

SAL only apostilles these after a Notary Public has notarised them. We add notarisation and SAL authentication when it's needed.

Handwritten names on a birth certificate

SAL has to verify them. We tell you whether a new extract from ICA is the faster route.

Verification only through your own login

If a document can only be checked through your SingPass or your personal email, SAL needs you at the counter. We tell you upfront, so no trip is wasted.

SAL Apostille — FAQs

How much does an SAL apostille cost in Singapore?

SAL charges SGD 10.70 to apostille a Singapore government document it can verify, or SGD 11.77 on an SAL-made copy. A notarised document instead carries a SGD 75 notarial certificate and SGD 87.20 SAL authentication; our fee starting from SGD 35 per document (from SGD 199 when a notary step is needed) is quoted on top, as one all-in total.

How long does an SAL apostille take in Singapore?

The SAL counter works on a walk-in basis, Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, with no appointment; it is closed on weekends and public holidays. Our turnaround is 1–2 working days, including when a notary step is needed first. We confirm your timeline before you pay.

Can someone collect the apostille for me?

Yes. SAL accepts a proxy without an authorisation letter, as long as your document can be verified without your SingPass or email login. That's exactly what we do for clients.

Is an SAL apostille the same as SAL legalisation?

Yes. Since 16 September 2021, SAL affixes an apostille certificate on every document it legalises, whatever the destination.

Do I still need to go to MFA?

No. MFA handed the legalisation of Singapore documents to SAL on 20 January 2021; documents MFA legalised up to 19 January 2021 can still be used. See MFA legalisation in Singapore.

Can SAL apostille a document issued in another country?

No. SAL only legalises Singapore documents. It does not legalise foreign documents; ask us about yours and we confirm the route with you.

Does my NUS or NTU degree need a notary first?

No. SAL can verify certificates from NUS, NTU, SMU, SIT, SUSS, SUTD, the polytechnics, ITE and NIEC directly. International and private school certificates need notarisation first.

How can the receiving country check my apostille?

Every SAL apostille can be verified on SAL's online register at legalisation.sal.sg.

Is this the Singapore Academy of Law's website?

No. We are an independent Singapore document service. SAL is the government-appointed authority; we prepare your documents and take them to SAL for you.
