Quick answer
Does Your Document Need Notarisation Before the Apostille?
To notarise and apostille a document in Singapore, a Singapore Notary Public first notarises it, then the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) authenticates the notarial certificate and attaches its apostille certificate. This applies to private documents — powers of attorney, company letters and resolutions, bank letters, passport copies, employment letters and certificates from private or international schools. Government documents SAL can verify directly, such as an ICA birth certificate or a degree from NUS or NTU, skip the notary.
This page is part of our Notary Public in Singapore service. If your document can go straight to SAL, see our SAL apostille service in Singapore instead — we will tell you which route applies, free.

Why Notarised Documents Still Get Stuck
Signed before you met the notary
Documents that need a witnessed signature — POAs, declarations, consent letters — must be signed in front of the notary after identity verification. We tell you not to sign in advance, and book you in to sign in front of the notary.
Wrong name or ID details
If the name on the document doesn't match your passport or NRIC, the notary cannot certify it as it stands. We check spellings and ID numbers from a photo before your appointment.
Document not in English
SAL needs documents in English or bilingual (including English), and SAL does not translate. We arrange translation and apostille in the correct order when the text is in another language.
Digital document SAL can't verify
If an OpenCerts file or PDF cannot be checked through its QR code, it has to be notarised first. See digital document apostille.
Non-Hague destination
For countries such as the UAE, Qatar or Malaysia, the apostille is not the last step — the document also needs embassy attestation in Singapore. We plan the full chain from the start.
