Quick answer
Do You Need Chinese Embassy Legalisation for a Singapore Birth Certificate?
No. China has been a Hague Apostille Convention member since 7 November 2023, so a Singapore birth certificate apostille for China from the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) replaces Chinese embassy legalisation. SAL can apostille a Singapore birth certificate directly when it can verify it, for SGD 10.70 per document.
The open question is language. The office in China handling hukou or travel documents may ask for a Chinese translation — confirm this with the receiving office before you start. If a translation is needed, it is prepared, notarised by a Notary Public and then authenticated by SAL. Read more on our birth certificate apostille and apostille for China pages.
Not sure whether the office wants a translation? Send us their checklist — we confirm the route before you pay.
Why Birth Certificates for China Get Turned Away
Laminated certificate
SAL cannot apostille a laminated document. We help you obtain a fresh extract, or SAL can apostille an SAL-made copy for SGD 11.77 — only if the office in China accepts a copy.
Handwritten names
Older birth certificates may have names written by hand. SAL has to verify them; we tell you whether a new extract is the faster route.
Digital certificate with a faulty QR code
The printout must match the online version exactly and the QR code must scan. See our digital document apostille service — we print, test and check before SAL.
Translation done in the wrong order
If a Chinese translation is required, it has to be notarised and then authenticated by SAL — a loose translation stapled to an apostilled certificate may not meet the office's request. We sequence it correctly.
